Street legal performance cars today are more powerful than ever before. It would seem that while a decade ago 500 hp made you the big dog in your hometown, today it’s just the starting point.
Many of those that are making these insane power levels are also still rowing their own gears. If you’re rowing those gears, and you’re not driving what would be considered a full-on race car, then you’re probably running something heavy duty in the clutch department.
McLeod’s RST street clutch for cars up to 800HP
The RXT street clutch can handle up to 1,000 HP and the RXT1200 can Handle a Whopping 1200 Crank Horsepower!
Enthusiasts have been turning to McLeod Racing for just such a clutch solution in their RST and RXT line. These clutches can handle up to 1,200 hp but still offer a comfortable pedal feel that won’t leave you massaging a charlie horse after a trip through downtown at rush hour.
That being said, there’s been confusion by some installers over the years as to how to install the adapter ring that comes with and is necessary for the use of a RST or RXT clutch. Some applications don’t include a flywheel, though you can purchase one separately.
In an effort to minimize part numbers as well as both development expense (as well as expense to the customer), McLeod engineered just three adapter rings to fit most applications. Each kit includes the proper adapter ring. Orienting and installing these rings can be a frustrating affair. They’re not simply stamped, “Ford 4.6” or “Chevy 6.0”. This can make fitting the ring to the flywheel a puzzling scenario.
The first adapter ring is our large red ring. This ring is most commonly used in all part numbers that start out as 6911 or 6921. This adapter ring fits all of the large diameter flywheels such as the following:
Chevy 168T
Chrysler 143T, 172T
Ford 164T, 176T, 180T, 184T
Buick, Olds, Pontiac 160T, 166T
Our next ring is our small black ring. This ring is most commonly used in part numbers that start out as 6913 or 6923. This adapter ring fits all of the small diameter flywheels such as the following:
Chevy 153T
Chrysler 130T
Ford 157T
Buick, Olds, Pontiac 153T, 156T
Our last ring is our large gold metric ring. This ring is most commonly used in part numbers that start out as 6912 or 6932. This adapter ring fits all of the metric flywheels that are found on new model cars such as the following:
Chevrolet/Pontiac 168T LS-X 1997-2004 LS1/LS6 Flat Style Flywheel.

All McLeod street performance clutches require a Break-In Period of 500-750 miles of street, stop and go type of driving prior to driving at wide open throttle. This mileage is required to properly seat the disc with the pressure plate and the flywheel. The mileage listed will provide about 1200 apply and release cycles to the clutch assembly.
DO NOT run the vehicle on a chassis dyno prior to full Break-In procedure.
Important: During performance driving and break-in, all traction control devices must be turned off or clutch slippage will occur!

I had this clutch kit installed professionally by my mechanic in my 2007 Shelby Gt 500. This clutch is by far the best mod investment I have made since buying this car almost seven years ago. The pedal pressure is light, the shifting is smooth, and it falls right into gear. It has really enhanced the overall experience of driving my Shelby.
